Long Beach Current:

While attending CSULB, I was honored to contribute to the Long Beach Current as they transitioned over from the Daily 49er to better fit with the cultural and historical standards. “Changing our name is the first step in our mission to evolve with the times and create a lasting legacy of sensitivity, collaboration and care for our community. We are always learning from our past and growing to a better future,” the paper’s site reads. Working with this prestigious paper, with it’s award -winning history and successful line of staff and contributors - was an important lesson in my journey.

This opportunity helped me to grow my skills:

  • collaboration - working with editors and contributors to come up with the right piece for the article

  • deadlines - being flexible but also setting boundaries to get the piece out for publication to print or online

  • design for online & print - working with double sets of standards for what is acceptable for print and online standards

Coast Report:

While attending Orange Coast College, I served two semesters on the Editorial Board of Coast Report, the award-winning campus’s digital paper of record. I received awards from Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) and Coast Report for photography, social media and writing. In my time at the paper, we also were awarded top 10 awards in ACP Best in Show News Website, two-year schools Best in Show News Website category, an overall General Excellence Award for news websites, first place for Two-Year Newspaper Website of the Year, second place for Two-Year Best College Media Group of the Year and third place for Division III & Two-Year Website of the Year (standalone) categories at the CMA Pinnacle College Media Awards, podcast series to its offering and, in its first semester up and running second place in the Podcast/Audio News category.

This opportunity helped me to grow my skills:

  • collaboration - working with newspaper staff to bring their vision and article to life through the image

  • effective communication - with the President’s office, departments heads, professors, staff and peers

  • time management - balancing home, college, work and position as the Managing Editor of the school paper
